You may set idle and max spark advance in this way in your driveway. There's a mark on the harmonic balancer - sort of a little bite chewed out on the back edge that's supposed to line up with a vertical dash on the lower (metal) timing belt cover. When the inspection hole dots are lined up on the crank and the cam gear marks are lined up, the "T" should be seen through that inspection hole. With the -0- mark on the flywheel in the middle of the engine bay near the front of the top window the the 1st cylinder lobes are off to each side so the lifters are up, but the lobes are at a down angle. When the inspection hole dots are lined up on the crank and the cam gear marks are lined up, the "T" should be seen through that inspection hole. For Honda, and most others, bikes the crank rotates in the same direction as the wheels, so the "| |" marks will appear first, then the "F" mark, and lastly the "T" mark. When I shoot the flywheel window with the timing light a long carved out notch shows up in relation to the pointer. The notch is 1/2" long. What does this mean? I see no other marks on the flywheel. Remove the flywheel screen and look on the shoud, there should be 3 ticks imprinted on it one at 12 o'clock and two others around 2 and 10 o'clock.
